This "book" is a collection of tiny maps, mileage charts and tables that show with distance, water sources, resupply locations (post offices, stores, trailheads, etc.) and other facilities along the trail. There is an elaborate coding system, for example On the Kindle each page is reduced to microscopic print, which if you expand, means you can only see a portion of the chart. For example in the "Resupply Data" section (a chart of multiple pages) there are seven columns: Landmark, Facilities, Difference (in mileage from the above entry), S->N (total distance if traveling North), Elevation, Gradient (average for each section), and Map (a reference to the Wilderness Press Guidebooks for each Landmark).

For example, one row has the following information:
— Landmark: General Delivery, Campo, CA 91906 (619)478-5466
— Facilities: PO,w,G,r,R,0.30m N (Translation: There is a post office, water source, grocery store, a register, a Road, all located 0.3 miles north) (there are also abbreviations for when there’s lodging, shower facilities, a road, and other information when said facilities are are nearby instead of all at the same place).

Pages and pages of charts like the above show landmarks spaced apart as little as 0.1 mile up to several miles; the vast majority of distances apart are less than a mile (0.1, 0.7, 0.4, 0.7, 0.8, 0.2, 0.0, 0.5, 0.4, 0.6, 0.5, 0.2, 2.0, 1.2, 0.7, 2.9 etc.) and the reason I mention this is it’s hard to imagine hiking two thousand plus miles with my eyes glued to the chart making sure I don’t miss any landmarks most of which are not that important. There is more information, in very fine print, than I can ever imagine taking with me on a long backpack trip.
